“I have seen a whale before. This trip, I've seen plenty, though none of the photos came out great, showing only the back of whales. It was nothing like photos of national geographic. The marina is about 35 minutes west of Funchal. We were all wearing masks even though we were in the ocean. It was a cold, grey day. Better bundle up. I was so glad that I wrapped up in a scarf. “We spent a full day with Ernesto on the lovely island of Madeira. It seems like so much more than an island, with wonderful views regardless of the location. Sometimes it’s the terraced hills ready for planting, the masses of banana trees or seaside villages. Ernesto was our driver and he was excellent with navigating the sometimes narrow, winding roads with hairpin turns in some places. “Amazing! We saw 3 different species of dolphins (common, striped and spotted) on the trip, who were in 3 separate pods. The size of the boat (& small number of passengers) allowed us to get close to the dolphins, but the captain and guide were conscious of not interfering with or upsetting the dolphins by staying for too long or chasing them in the boat. Highly recommend 👍. A young couple even got the opportunity to get into the water with the dolphins. I would have loved to do this too, but wasn’t prepared with my swimsuit and towel unfortunately. Next time!”
